COMPTON, Calif. — A 54-year-old Los Angeles man has been arrested and charged with murder in a Fourth of July shooting that killed a 19-year-old University of Nevada, Las Vegas student and wounded two teenage girls, authorities said.
Antoine Jones is charged with killing Meah Bordenave-Jenkins during a large holiday gathering at an apartment complex in the 700 block of West Laurel Street. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Jones also faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. The criminal complaint alleges that Jones personally fired a handgun. The charges are allegations, and Jones is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were called to the apartment complex at about 11:20 p.m. July 4 after gunfire broke out during the celebration. Deputies found Bordenave-Jenkins suffering from fatal gunshot wounds, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two teenage girls who were shot outside the complex survived their injuries, officials said.
Bordenave-Jenkins was studying nursing at UNLV and was preparing to enter her sophomore year, according to her family. Relatives said she hoped to become a nurse who cared for newborns suffering from serious injuries. She had been staying with her older sister for the summer when she attended the Compton gathering.
Jones is also suspected of taking part in a separate car-to-car shooting June 29 in Anaheim, Anaheim Police Chief Manny Cid said. Investigators believe that shooting involved two adult men and stemmed from a domestic dispute involving a woman. Cid said Anaheim detectives identified Jones as one of the suspected gunmen and later worked with the Sheriff’s Department as authorities investigated the Compton killing.
Officials have not said what evidence led detectives to connect Jones to the gunfire that killed Bordenave-Jenkins. Authorities also have not publicly identified a suspected motive in her death. Hochman said Jones could face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted as charged.
The gunfire outside the apartment complex was initially reported as one incident, but investigators now believe two separate and unrelated shootings occurred moments apart at the crowded property. Eric Washington, a 37-year-old community advocate and public housing employee, was killed in the other shooting. Another man was wounded and survived.
Sheriff Robert Luna said detectives have not found evidence that the attack involving Washington was connected to the shooting in which Jones is charged. No arrest has been announced in Washington’s killing, and investigators have not released a description of the person or people they believe were responsible.
Jones was scheduled to be arraigned in a Compton courtroom Friday. The court proceedings will determine whether he enters a plea and whether he remains in custody while the criminal case moves forward.
