Man Dead After Chase, Crash And Shooting In Cleveland

Police said the pursuit began with Newburgh Heights officers before ending in Slavic Village.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 23-year-old Cleveland man died Wednesday after a short pursuit ended in a crash, a foot chase and a shooting in the city’s Slavic Village neighborhood, police said.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner identified the man as Jumel Lewis. Cleveland police said they were called to assist Newburgh Heights police, who had been pursuing a vehicle before the chase moved into Cleveland. The incident left Lewis dead, another person shot and several crash victims hurt.

Police said Lewis crashed into several vehicles near East 74th Street and Harvard Avenue after the pursuit. After the crash, he ran south from the scene and shot a person near the 7400 block of Clement Avenue, according to Cleveland police. That victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Police did not immediately release the victim’s name or say what led to the shooting after the crash.

Investigators said Lewis later went into the backyard of a home in the 7500 block of Park Avenue, where he shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police described the gunshot as self-inflicted. The crash victims also were listed in stable condition, officials said. Details about how many vehicles were struck and how many people were injured in the crash were not immediately released.

The case now has two tracks. Cleveland Police Accident Investigation is handling the crash scene, while Cleveland police are handling the investigation into the suspect shooting. Officials had not announced charges or a motive Wednesday. Because Lewis died at the scene, police did not report any pending charges against him.

The incident stretched across several blocks of Slavic Village, from the crash site at East 74th Street and Harvard Avenue to Clement Avenue and Park Avenue. Police remained focused on the sequence of events, including the pursuit, the crash, the shooting of the second person and Lewis’ death.

As of Thursday, police had not released more information about the pursuit’s original cause. The next step is the completion of crash and shooting reports by Cleveland investigators.
