ST. LOUIS, Mo. — A man in his 20s died early Monday after a dispute outside Busch Stadium ended in a stabbing on stadium property in downtown St. Louis, police said.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police said officers were called about 2:45 a.m. Monday, May 4, to the 700 block of Clark Avenue for a report of a cutting. The victim was found with a stab wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said a man in his 60s was taken into custody.
The stabbing happened outside the ballpark after the Cardinals played the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon and before a Monday night game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Police said the people involved were third-party contractors working overnight at the stadium. Officials described the killing as isolated and said it should not affect the larger safety discussion downtown.
Police have not released the victim’s name, the suspect’s name or the company that employed either man. Investigators also had not announced charges Monday. The department said detectives were still reviewing what led to the dispute and what happened before officers arrived.
The 700 block of Clark Avenue sits along one of the busiest sports and entertainment corridors in St. Louis. Busch Stadium anchors the area, with nearby restaurants, parking garages, hotels and Ballpark Village drawing large crowds on game days. The overnight timing meant the stabbing occurred outside the usual fan traffic around the stadium.
Investigators are expected to present findings to prosecutors after police complete witness interviews and evidence review. The next formal update could include the victim’s identity, a charging decision and more detail about whether the men knew each other before the dispute.
The Cardinals remained scheduled to play Milwaukee on Monday evening. As of Monday afternoon, police said the investigation was ongoing and the suspect remained in custody.
