Man Faces Murder Charges After Victim of Brutal December Attack Dies from Injuries

TAMPA, Fla. — A tragic incident in Tampa has led to first-degree murder charges against a young man following the death of a 65-year-old woman, months after a brutal assault. Authorities said the victim, severely attacked in December, succumbed to her injuries in March, raising the stakes in a case that has already shocked the local community.

In the early morning of December 26 last year, Hillsborough County deputies were called to University Area Park after receiving reports of an injured woman. Upon arrival, they discovered Cerida Charon, a resident of the area, who had been viciously attacked and robbed, the sheriff’s office reported.

Investigators used surveillance footage from the park to identify 18-year-old Antonio Gueits as the assailant. Footage showed Gueits approaching Charon, striking her in the face, and after she fell, stomping on her head repeatedly, officials said. He reportedly fled the scene after taking her purse.

Charon was hospitalized with critical injuries, including multiple fractures and a brain bleed, immediately after the attack. Despite intensive medical efforts, she remained hospitalized and was pronounced dead on March 16 at Morton Plant Hospital, authorities confirmed.

An autopsy by the Pinellas County Medical Examiner determined that Charon died of complications from blunt force trauma to the head, ruling her death a homicide. The day following her death, the charges against Gueits were upgraded to first-degree murder.

In addition to murder, Gueits faces multiple other charges including robbery and aggravated battery, reflecting the severity of the attack on an elderly victim. Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed the community’s outrage and grief, condemning the senseless violence over a petty theft.

“This horrific act robbed an innocent elderly woman of her life, resulting in months of suffering,” Chronister said. “We are committed to seeking justice for Cerida Charon and holding those responsible accountable for such a brutal crime.”

The case has garnered attention due to the stark contrast between the victim and the accused — an elderly woman living a quiet life and a young man just starting adulthood. Legal experts emphasize the seriousness of the charges, which carry a potential life sentence.

“Our community is left trying to make sense of this violence,” said local attorney Anthony Rickman, not involved in the case. “It’s a stark reminder of the impact of violent crime and the consequences that can extend from a single moment of aggression.”

Rickman also noted the potential life sentence facing Gueits, highlighting both the severity of the crime and the life-altering stakes for all involved. The case continues to be under investigation as authorities piece together the events that led to such a tragic outcome.

As the legal process unfolds, the community and the victim’s family await justice, hoping for closure in a case that has highlighted the fragile nature of public safety and the devastating impact of unprovoked violence.
