Man Found Guilty of 2nd Degree Murder in LES Drunk Driving Case

LOWER MANHATTAN, NY – Daniel Heiden, once a substance abuse counselor, has been convicted of second-degree murder following a devastating crash on the Lower East Side. The incident, which occurred on July 4 last year, resulted in four fatalities at a park event.

In the courtroom, emotions ran high as the judge found Heiden guilty on multiple counts. Families of the victims felt a bittersweet sense of justice, though the pain of their loss remains.

The trial was conducted without a jury, with the judge hearing testimonies from those present at the park. Witnesses described the horror as Heiden, intoxicated, drove his truck into the crowd at high speed, disrupting the holiday celebration.

Victims included Lucille and Herman Pinkney, Emily Ruiz, and Anna Morrell. Hector Moreno, among those injured, recounted being hurled through the air and witnessing the deaths of his friends.

Earlier, Heiden had been involved in a scuffle at Pier 36, where his inebriation barred him from boarding a party boat. Despite police intervention, he was permitted to leave, later causing the fatal crash. His blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.17.

Heiden’s past as a counselor and author of “The Sober Addict” contrasts sharply with his actions, adding a tragic irony to the case.

Sentencing is set for December 3, providing a moment for the community to reflect and seek closure. Families of the victims remain hopeful that justice will serve as a lasting tribute.
