Three men were shot while riding in a vehicle early Sunday, police said.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose police are investigating a deadly triple shooting after unknown suspects opened fire on a vehicle early Sunday near South First and East Reed streets, killing one man and injuring two others.
The attack drew homicide detectives to a downtown corridor just south of the city center. Police said the three victims were adult men and all were inside a vehicle when the gunfire began. The death raised San Jose’s homicide count to 10 for the year.
The shooting was reported at about 2:19 a.m. May 31. Patrol officers arrived and found the three men with gunshot wounds. Emergency crews took them to local hospitals, where one man died from his injuries. The two other victims were later listed with injuries that police said were not life-threatening.
Police said the preliminary investigation showed one or more unknown suspects fired multiple rounds into the victims’ vehicle, then left before officers arrived. Investigators had not released a motive, a suspect description or the name of the man who died. Officials said those details remained part of the active investigation.
The scene forced traffic closures around South First Street and East Reed Street while officers marked evidence and checked the area. The intersection sits near downtown housing, nightlife and major event space, making the early morning shooting a visible disruption in one of the city’s central neighborhoods.
The San Jose Police Department’s homicide unit is leading the case. Police identified Detective Sgt. Martinez and Detective Aboud as the investigators assigned to receive information from the public. No court dates or charging decisions had been announced because no arrest had been reported.
By Monday, police said the surviving victims were expected to live. The search for the suspects continued, and detectives had not said whether the victims and shooter knew each other.
