CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 23-year-old man was killed and two teenagers were wounded Sunday afternoon after gunfire erupted during a fight in Cleveland’s 3500 block of West 48th Street, police said.
The shooting drew a response from Cleveland police and EMS crews around 2 p.m. Sunday. Investigators said the violence began during an altercation involving a group of people, then escalated when shots were fired. All three victims were taken to MetroHealth Hospital. The 23-year-old man was later pronounced dead, turning the case into a homicide investigation as detectives worked to sort out what led to the gunfire and who opened fire.
Police said officers from the Second District were first called to the block after a report of shots fired. Early information indicated that several people had been involved in a fight before the shooting. By late Sunday, investigators had identified three gunshot victims: a 23-year-old man, a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old. EMS crews took all three from the scene to MetroHealth Hospital for treatment. The older victim died at the hospital, while the two teenagers remained under medical care.
Emergency officials said the 16-year-old was in critical condition and the 15-year-old was in serious condition. Police did not immediately release the names of the victims or say what sparked the confrontation. Detectives also did not say how many shots were fired, whether more than one weapon was involved, or whether the people involved knew one another before the violence broke out. Those unanswered questions remained central to the investigation Sunday night.
