Residents expressed alarm after an early-morning attack on Evans Street left a man critically injured and the suspected attacker unidentified.
ATLANTA — An assault that left a man in a coma has unsettled people near a busy West End commercial property as Atlanta police use surveillance footage to search for the person accused of attacking him.
The violence was reported at about 3:50 a.m. July 21 at 633 Evans Street SW. Responding officers found a man with serious injuries after a physical confrontation, police said. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and remained unconscious when authorities released images of a possible suspect Tuesday.
The attack occurred during the early-morning hours, when fewer customers, employees and pedestrians would have been in the area. Investigators have not said how long the two men were at the property, whether they arrived together or what happened immediately before the assault.
A woman who asked FOX 5 Atlanta not to identify her said she was walking nearby when she saw paramedics treating the injured man. She described seeing blood on his face and said she was told that he had suffered a serious blow to the head. Police confirmed that the victim had a severe head injury but did not publicly provide further medical details.
The woman’s account was one of the few descriptions released from the scene. Police have not identified other witnesses or said whether employees at nearby businesses directly observed the confrontation. Investigators also have not released the complete surveillance video.
Another resident called the attack senseless and said the victim did not deserve what happened. The comments reflected concern among people who use the surrounding businesses and streets, although police have not announced evidence that the assault was part of a broader pattern or that the unidentified man poses a specific threat to other residents.
Detectives believe the assault was unprovoked, according to preliminary information released by the department. That description remains part of an active investigation. Authorities have not explained how they reached that initial conclusion or whether the victim was able to speak with investigators before losing consciousness.
Surveillance equipment at or near the property gave investigators images of the man they are trying to identify. Such recordings can help establish when people arrived, where they moved and how they left, but police have not disclosed what portions of the encounter were captured.
Police asked members of the public to review the released images and provide information through Crime Stoppers Atlanta. Anonymous tips can be submitted at 404-577-8477, through the organization’s website or by texting CSGA. A tip that leads to an arrest and indictment may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.
The suspect remained unidentified, and no arrest had been announced as of Wednesday. Police had not released a new report on the victim’s condition or said when additional surveillance material might become public.
