London, England – A man has been sentenced for the violent and sustained attack that resulted in the death of Irishman James ‘JJ’ Donnelly in Hayes, West London. The perpetrator, Leo Pryce, 22, pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility at a hearing earlier this year. He was subsequently sentenced to a Hospital Order under section 37 of the Mental Health Act at the Old Bailey.
Donnelly, originally from Thurles, Co. Tipperary, was found dead in his home on July 15, 2023, after a brutal assault by Pryce, who had befriended him in the weeks leading up to the tragic event. Pryce, who was suffering from undiagnosed schizophrenia, attacked Donnelly in his home on Station Road, leading to his untimely death.
Following the discovery of Donnelly’s body and a subsequent investigation, police quickly identified Pryce as the suspect based on witness accounts at the scene. He was arrested the day after the incident and charged with multiple offenses. The victim, a former soldier who had served with Ireland’s UN Peace Force, was laid to rest in his native Ireland on August 4, 2023.
In addition to the murder charge, Pryce also pleaded guilty to possessing a weapon and two counts of assaulting emergency services workers. His case highlighted the importance of community cooperation in assisting law enforcement in solving crimes. The sentencing also included further restrictions under section 41 of the Mental Health Act to ensure public safety and address Pryce’s mental health needs.
