Bishop Auckland, England — A man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison following a violent assault against his partner during a turbulent period in their relationship. Michael Burden, 47, displayed aggressive behavior that not only left his partner fearing for her safety but also caused significant damage to her property.
The series of events escalated over the course of their 10-month relationship, marked by conflict and distress. Burden’s violent tendencies culminated in a harrowing incident at his partner’s home in November 2024. During a confrontation fueled by allegations of infidelity, Burden violently attacked her, biting her lip and forcibly pulling out a chunk of her hair. The victim managed to defend herself, striking Burden with a wooden bat, which prompted him to leave the scene temporarily.
However, the situation worsened when Burden returned to the residence, kicking in the front door and destroying her belongings, including her Apple watch, resulting in damages exceeding £400. The victim fled to a neighbor’s house, seeking refuge from the turmoil that had invaded her home.
The court learned that Burden’s erratic behavior had profound effects on the victim’s mental health, compelling her to apply for a restraining order to prevent further contact. Despite these measures, the couple encountered one another again in July 2025, at which point the woman ended their relationship. Shortly thereafter, a rock was thrown through her window, with Burden denying any involvement, despite being caught on doorbell camera footage lingering near her home.
In a victim statement presented to the court, the woman expressed how Burden’s actions had stripped her of the sense of safety in her own home, significantly contributing to her mental health struggles. Burden, who has a criminal record with 15 prior convictions for 32 offenses, acknowledged the severity of his actions during court proceedings.
His defense attorney described Burden’s behavior as “appalling,” noting that he recognized the wrongfulness of his conduct and felt remorse. Despite these claims, the court emphasized the seriousness of the assaults and the psychological impact on the victim.
Recorder Peter Makepeace KC, presiding over the case at Durham Crown Court, imposed an 18-month prison sentence on Burden and enforced a restraining order set to last for five years. This decision highlights the broader issue of domestic violence and its repercussions, reinforcing that such behavior will not be tolerated.
As Burden serves his sentence, the case serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking help and the need for legal protections against domestic abuse, underscoring the critical role of the judicial system in addressing and curbing such violent acts.
