Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Attempted Murder in Hate-Fueled Attack on Women in Aurora

AURORA, Colo. — A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempting to kill two women after targeting them based on their sexual orientation. The incident, which took place on February 19, 2023, involved 47-year-old Vitalie Oprea, who took his parents’ vehicle without permission.

According to officials from the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Oprea confronted the women as they stood at a street corner, allegedly believing them to be a same-sex couple. Witnesses reported that Oprea began shouting obscenities and making inappropriate gestures towards them. In an alarming display, he made a U-turn and drove against oncoming traffic in what appeared to be an effort to intimidate the women.

Realizing the threatening nature of Oprea’s actions, the women sought refuge in a nearby truck. Despite their attempts to escape, Oprea drove over a curb and onto a sidewalk, continuing to pursue them into a grassy area. He subsequently rammed the truck containing the women and tried to forcibly pull one of them out of the vehicle.

After the incident, Oprea fled the scene but was apprehended by law enforcement nearly 20 miles away in Arvada. The women informed authorities that they feared for their lives during the altercation. Their accounts were supported by witnesses who confirmed the chilling encounter.

When questioned by police, Oprea reportedly expressed his motives starkly, stating that he targeted the women because he witnessed them kissing and harbored violent intentions towards them. As a result, he pleaded guilty to the charge of attempted first-degree murder with an enhancement for violent conduct.

The case has drawn considerable attention, highlighting ongoing issues surrounding violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. Advocacy groups have renewed calls for increased measures to protect vulnerable communities, emphasizing the need for awareness and education to combat hate-fueled violence.

Oprea’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the dangerous climate many individuals face due to their sexual orientation, and the legal system’s role in addressing such acts of aggression. The severity of his sentence reflects society’s commitment to confronting hate crimes and supporting the rights and safety of all citizens.
