Deputies recovered a handgun and detained a woman at the scene; detectives say no wider threat is suspected as they piece together what happened.
LAKEWOOD, Calif. — A man, a woman and a 17-year-old girl were found shot to death Thursday morning inside a home on the 5800 block of Lorelei Avenue, authorities said. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies arrived after a 7:53 a.m. call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon and discovered the victims along with a handgun inside the residence.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau are trying to determine what led to the shooting, which unfolded in a residential neighborhood near South Street and Bellflower Boulevard. The victims, believed to be members of the same family, were pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released their names, pending notification of relatives. Investigators detained a woman who ran from the house as deputies arrived. As of late Thursday, investigators said they did not believe there was an outstanding suspect or a threat to the wider community, and they continued interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
Deputies were dispatched just before 8 a.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department. When they reached the single-story home, they encountered a distraught woman outside and detained her while they cleared the residence. Inside, they found the bodies of a man, a woman and a teenage girl with gunshot wounds to their upper torsos. Lt. Daniel Vizcarra of the Homicide Bureau said the detained woman is believed to be related to the victims. A handgun was recovered in the home. “We are still working to determine the sequence of events,” Vizcarra said. Deputy David Yoo said the three were declared dead at the scene by responding personnel.
Authorities said early indications point to the incident being contained to the home. Detectives canvassed the block for surveillance footage and spoke with neighbors who heard sirens but little commotion beforehand. Officials declined to say who owned the gun or how many shots were fired. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the county Medical Examiner’s office. The Sheriff’s Department said the detained woman had not been identified as a suspect as of Thursday afternoon, and no motive was immediately known. The home remained taped off as forensic specialists photographed rooms and gathered shell casings and other potential evidence.
The triple slaying shook a city that, while bordered by busier corridors, is largely made up of quiet residential streets. Neighbors described the Lorelei Avenue block as calm and family-oriented. Several said they often saw a teenager coming and going from the address and had waved to the adults on morning walks. Lakewood, incorporated in 1954, sits in southeastern Los Angeles County near Long Beach and Bellflower. While the area has seen isolated violent crimes in recent years, multiple residents said a daytime killing inside a home was rare on their street.
Investigators are working through standard steps in a homicide probe: securing search warrants as needed, tracing the recovered firearm, and awaiting preliminary autopsy findings from the Medical Examiner, which will include ballistics trajectory analysis and gunshot residue testing. Detectives said they will examine phone records and recent communications among household members. The Sheriff’s Department said formal identification of the victims will be issued by the Medical Examiner, along with times of death. Officials said any decision on arrests or charges would follow evidence review and consultation with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Outside the taped perimeter, neighbors watched from driveways as crime scene investigators moved in and out of the residence carrying evidence bags. “Shocking is an understatement,” said Dr. Kasey Phillips Brown, who lives nearby. Another neighbor, Rochelle Corros, called it “such a tragedy” and said the block is usually quiet during school and commute hours. A Lakewood city official stopped by to speak with residents and confirm that detectives believed the violence was contained to the address.
As of late Thursday, the Sheriff’s Department had not released the victims’ identities or confirmed any arrests. Detectives planned to remain on the scene into the night to complete processing of the home. An update from the Homicide Bureau is expected after the Medical Examiner completes initial work and next-of-kin notifications, which officials said could come as soon as Friday.
