Manhunt Underway for Armed Suspect Following Tragic Shooting of Two Police Officers in Porepunkah

Porepunkah, Australia — A large-scale manhunt is underway for an armed individual accused of fatally shooting two police officers during an operation on Tuesday morning. The fatal incident occurred at a rural property in Porepunkah, located approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Melbourne, where a detective, 59, and a senior constable, 35, were killed in a violent confrontation.

During the incident, a third officer suffered serious injuries and underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the lower body. Authorities believe the suspect, identified as Dezi Freeman, a local resident and self-described “sovereign citizen,” had previously voiced disdain for law enforcement, labeling them “terrorist thugs.”

According to Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush, a contingent of ten officers arrived at Rayner Track around 10:30 a.m. to carry out a search warrant. Upon their arrival, they encountered Freeman, who reportedly opened fire, resulting in the tragic deaths of the two officers.

“They were brutally murdered,” Bush stated, adding that Freeman was heavily armed and was able to escape into dense bushland. Police attempted to pursue him but he managed to evade capture, fleeing into the wilderness alone.

Following the shooting, police confirmed the safety of Freeman’s family, including his partner and children, who visited a local police station later that evening. Authorities reported no indication that they were with him during or after the incident.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese characterized the shooting as “horrific” during an appearance on a national news program, expressing condolences to the families of the fallen officers. “This is terrible news, and my heart goes out to those grieving tonight,” he remarked, emphasizing the risks law enforcement officers face daily.

Local residents received advisories from Victoria Police urging them to stay indoors due to the ongoing threat posed by the suspect. Chief Commissioner Bush stressed the urgency of the situation, stating, “He is a dangerous individual who must be apprehended. We are dedicating all available resources to this search.”

Hundreds of officers are currently involved in the extensive search for Freeman, with police actively soliciting information from the public. In a show of solidarity, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan described the officers’ deaths as “heartbreaking,” underscoring the inherent dangers faced by those in law enforcement.

Wayne Gatt, CEO of the Police Association Victoria, acknowledged the magnitude of the loss, stating that the fallen officers “paid the ultimate price for protecting the community.” He noted that police stations across the state fell silent as officers mourned their colleagues.

As the search continues, Gatt reminded those in the force that while they remain committed to their duties, many will eventually feel the weight of this tragedy in the solitude of their homes. “They will hold their loved ones a little tighter, aware of the colleagues who cannot do the same,” he added.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to reach out to their local police station or contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
