Fayetteville, North Carolina – A tragic incident unfolded on Valentine’s Day outside a convenience store in Fayetteville, North Carolina when Donte Jemal Lucas, 36, was shot and killed. Police have charged Tayshon Amonte Covington, 23, with first-degree murder in connection to the shooting.
According to an arrest warrant, surveillance footage captured Lucas approaching two individuals outside the store when one of them, wearing a bandana over his face, pulled out a gun and fatally shot Lucas in the forehead. Lucas was pronounced dead later that evening at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
The warrant revealed that the shooter had entered the store 30 to 40 minutes before the shooting, without wearing the mask at that time. The shooter then fled the scene in a black Chevrolet Tahoe after the incident. Crimestoppers tips identified the shooter as “Lil Kodiak” or “Lil Black,” linking the nickname to Covington.
Covington was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in an apartment in Garner and also faces a separate warrant for failing to appear in court for a previous breaking-and-entering charge. He is currently being held without bail at Cumberland County jail.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear as investigators continue to gather information about the tragic event. If convicted, Covington could face severe legal consequences for his alleged actions on that fateful Valentine’s Day.
