Mass Shooting at Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade Leaves 1 Dead, Numerous Injured

Kansas City, Missouri – A shooting at Union Station in downtown Kansas City left one person dead and multiple others injured on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred as the city prepared to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory with a parade.

According to the Kansas City Police Department, shots were fired from a garage just west of Union Station at around 2 p.m. local time. Authorities urged people to leave the area in response to the shooting.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacy Graves reported that at least 15 people were injured in the shooting, with one fatality. Three individuals are in critical condition, while five are in serious condition, and one suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins stated that at least 14 people were injured in the incident. Currently, University Health Truman Medical Center is treating four people for gunshot wounds, with eight more being treated for other injuries. Additionally, one victim in critical condition is receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at Saint Luke’s Hospital.

Authorities have not yet released details about the suspects or the motive behind the attack. Videos shared online of the parade showed chaotic scenes of fans fleeing the area, with police entering the station.

This shooting comes amid a decrease in mass shooting deaths for the first six weeks of 2024, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive. However, Kansas City saw record levels of shootings in 2023, with 182 murders reported by the police.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who attended the parade, expressed his concern for Kansas City in a tweet, saying “Praying for Kansas City…”
