SACRAMENTO, Calif. – One year after the tragic death of Tyre Nichols, his family gathered in Sacramento to honor his memory in a poignant ceremony on Sunday. Nichols, a Sacramento native, tragically passed away on Jan. 10, 2023, just three days after he was involved in an altercation with Memphis police officers following a traffic stop. He was only 29 years old.
During the ceremony held at the Tyre Nichols Skate Park, located at Regency Park in the Natomas area, affectionate words were spoken in remembrance of Nichols’ vibrant spirit. Khamari Ellis, Nichols’ nephew, described him as someone who always wore a smile and was dedicated to bringing joy to those around him.
In attendance, longtime friend Angelina Paxton expressed the immense difficulty of the past year and the importance of seeking justice, reform, and healing. The event included a candlelight vigil, prayer, and an illuminated balloon release, serving as a touching tribute to Nichols and a demonstration of support for his family as they prepare for the upcoming state trial of the four Memphis police officers charged in his death.
District 1 City Council Member Lisa Kaplan disclosed that Phase 2 of the skate park is in the works, with plans to have it completed by Nichols’ birthday in June. The trial for the four officers is scheduled to commence on Aug. 12, with each pleading not guilty to second-degree murder and other charges, while a fifth officer involved in the case has pleaded guilty to federal charges of excessive force and obstruction of justice.
The family’s determination to seek justice and healing in the wake of Nichols’ tragic passing underscores the profound impact of his life and the enduring legacy he has left behind in Sacramento and beyond.
