Memorial Gathering Turns Tragic: Colorado Man Charged with Murder After Cemetery Shooting Incident

Jefferson County, CO — A somber visit to a cemetery to honor the memory of a deceased friend ended in tragedy last weekend as a Colorado man fatally shot one of the attendees. The incident occurred at Crown Hill Cemetery on the evening of August 17, where a group had gathered to commemorate the birthday of their friend, who was killed two years ago.

At around 11 p.m., local law enforcement responded to a call from the cemetery. Upon arrival, officers discovered 20-year-old Geano Chavez with a gunshot wound. Chavez was quickly transported to Lutheran Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The group, consisting of family and friends, had assembled at the gravesite to honor their late friend. According to officials, tensions escalated leading to a violent altercation. Witnesses at the scene identified 22-year-old Ryan Trujillo-Falcon as the shooter. Police located him hiding near the cemetery shortly after the shooting.

During the arrest, Trujillo-Falcon admitted to the confrontation that led to Chavez’s death. He recounted that the situation worsened after telling Chavez to leave the cemetery because he felt ill and needed to vomit. The disagreement escalated when Trujillo-Falcon struck a woman at the scene with his pistol before turning the gun on Chavez, shooting him in the chest.

Trujillo-Falcon revealed to authorities that he had been illegally carrying the concealed weapon, lacking the necessary permit. He claimed that he started carrying the gun following the death of the friend whose grave they were visiting, who had also been a victim of gun violence.

Charged with murder, assault, and unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, Trujillo-Falcon is now facing serious legal consequences. His actions have not only resulted in a life lost but have also stirred concerns about gun safety and regulations, particularly regarding the carrying of concealed weapons without a permit.

The community and families involved are devastated by the turn of events, which has transformed a moment meant for remembrance into one of mourning and loss. This incident is a grave reminder of the potential for violence that can erupt, even in places meant for peace and reflection. As the investigation continues, many are calling for stricter enforcement of gun laws and interventions to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
