Memphis father, daughter found shot dead in Mississippi crash

Investigators say the double homicide likely happened between Feb. 28 and early March 1.

PANOLA COUNTY, Miss. — A father and daughter from Memphis were found dead inside a wrecked vehicle on a rural north Mississippi road early Sunday, and investigators said both appeared to have died from gunshot wounds. The Panola County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating the case as a double homicide.

Authorities released few details about what happened on River Road in central Panola County, but the deaths drew an immediate response from law enforcement agencies across the region and left relatives searching for answers. Investigators have not announced any arrests, named any suspects, or described a possible motive as they work to build a timeline around the crash and the gunfire.

Deputies were dispatched to River Road around 7 a.m. March 1 after a report of a one-vehicle collision, the sheriff’s office said. When responders arrived, they found two people inside the wrecked vehicle who were suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The victims were identified as Victor Gonzalez, 39, and Serenity Gonzalez, 19, both of Memphis, Tennessee, according to the sheriff’s office. Investigators said the two appeared to have died from gunshot wounds, and the case is being handled as a double homicide. The sheriff’s office said the shootings are believed to have occurred sometime between Saturday, Feb. 28, and early Sunday, March 1, but officials did not say when the vehicle left the roadway or when the crash was first noticed.

Officials also did not say how many shots were fired, what type of weapon may have been used, or whether the victims were shot inside the vehicle or elsewhere before the crash. The sheriff’s office has not released information about the car’s make and model, the direction of travel, or whether investigators believe another vehicle was involved. Authorities did not describe the condition of the road or the weather at the time of the crash report.

River Road runs through a quiet stretch of countryside near the town of Sardis, a small community that serves as one of Panola County’s county seats. The area includes farms, wooded patches, and scattered homes, and traffic can be light outside of peak travel hours. Investigators have not said whether they have recovered surveillance video from nearby properties or whether they are relying mostly on physical evidence found at the crash scene.

Family members have shared their own account of why the pair was traveling that morning, saying they had planned to meet someone to complete a purchase tied to an online listing. Authorities have not publicly confirmed that account, and the sheriff’s office has cautioned that the investigation is in its early stages. Sheriff Shane Phelps has spoken with family members, according to reports, but the agency has not released a detailed public narrative of the events leading up to the shooting.

Investigations of shootings tied to vehicles can move slowly because detectives often need to separate what happened during the gunfire from what happened during the crash. In cases like this, investigators typically look for bullet impacts, cartridge casings, and blood evidence, and they may request autopsy results to help determine the victims’ wounds and the likely sequence of events. The Panola County Sheriff’s Office has not said whether autopsies have been completed or whether results are pending from a state crime lab.

The sheriff’s office said it is asking for help gathering information as detectives work to identify who shot the victims and why. Authorities have not announced any planned news conferences, and they have not said whether the case involves a targeted attack, a robbery attempt, or another scenario. Investigators have not released any public description of a suspect, and they have not said whether they believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

Crime Stoppers of Panola County is accepting tips, and the sheriff’s office said information could help investigators narrow down where the victims traveled and who they may have met before the crash. Officials said calls can be made to Crime Stoppers at 662-209-2011. The sheriff’s office has not said whether it has obtained phone records, social media messages, or other digital evidence related to the victims’ last known contacts.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement is expected to keep processing the crash scene and interviewing anyone who may have been on River Road during the estimated time window. Detectives may also review any available records tied to the victims’ movements in the hours before the crash was reported. For now, authorities say the case remains under investigation and no arrests have been announced.
