Flint, MI – A local jury has convicted a Michigan man on multiple charges after he viciously assaulted a woman in May 2020, authorities reported. The attacker, Derek Cordell Garner Sr., 57, was found guilty of six felonies related to the prolonged and brutal attack that took place in his home where the victim was staying at the time.
During the trial, it was revealed that the victim, who was visiting Flint from another state for a court appearance regarding a custody dispute, saw Garner as a family friend. However, the dynamics of their relationship were brought into dispute, leading to an argument that escalated into violence. The ensuing assault lasted for eight hours, during which Garner subjected the victim to beating, sexual assault, and strangulation.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the victim tried fleeing the home multiple times but was forcibly brought back inside by Garner. The ordeal reached a critical moment when the victim managed to jump out of a first-floor window and run, seeking refuge and screaming for help in nearby neighbors’ yards. Her cries caught the attention of a resident who immediately contacted the police.
Responding to the emergency call around 10:30 p.m., police arrived at Herrick Street to find a distressed group of people gathered. One woman emerged from the crowd, her injuries apparent, and identified Garner as her assailant. Officers noted significant injuries to the victim, including swelling, bruising on her face, and blood-covered limbs.
Genesee County Prosecutor, David Leyton, expressed his horror over the nature of the crimes, citing the severe beating and trauma endured by the victim. “Her courageous cooperation with law enforcement was crucial in bringing this gruesome case to trial,” Leyton said. He praised the victim’s bravery, emphasizing its role in achieving justice and holding Garner accountable.
Garner has been convicted of a range of serious offenses, including assault by strangulation, third-degree domestic violence, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, interference with electronic communications, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and kidnapping.
