SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) – A tragic incident in Michigan has left a community mourning the loss of a couple who were killed in a head-on collision with a suspected wrong-way driver. Noriko Ernst, a member of Our Lady Sorrow Catholic Church in Farmington, expressed her shock and devastation upon hearing the news of the couple’s tragic deaths. Jen and Ryan Ambrosio, both in their 40s, leaves behind six young children.
The suspected wrong-way driver, identified as 35-year-old Angel Melendez-Ortiz, was reportedly attempting to evade law enforcement when the crash occurred on the Lodge Freeway. The couple was returning from a date night when their vehicle was struck by the wrong-way driver in the early hours of the morning. Melendez-Ortiz and his passenger, a 29-year-old woman, sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Ernst, who knew the couple from the church, described them as gentle, patient, and exemplary members of the church family. Meanwhile, Melendez-Ortiz is facing serious charges including two counts of second-degree murder, reckless driving and other felonies. If convicted, he could potentially face a life sentence in prison.
