Deputies say a pickup hit parked cars, burst a hydrant and caused two head-on collisions before stopping at a power pole.
VISTA, Calif. — A suspected drunken driver is accused of mowing through a Vista neighborhood on Monday night, striking several vehicles, rupturing a fire hydrant and crashing head-on into two cars during a mile-long rampage that ended against a power pole, authorities said.
Investigators identified the driver as 32-year-old Isaias Diego Miguel. He was arrested and booked into the county jail in Vista on 19 counts, including six felonies, after the series of wrecks that began about 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 on Oak Drive. Deputies say at least two motorists were hurt, including one treated at the scene and another with minor injuries. The case remains under investigation by the Vista Sheriff’s Station traffic unit, and officials are reviewing damage along the route, which winds past homes and neighborhood streets near Alta Vista Botanical Gardens.
The spree began inside an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Oak Drive, where a pickup hit a parked car and plowed through a steel gate before fleeing, deputies said. The truck then struck two more parked vehicles and smashed into a fire hydrant, sending water surging into the street. From there, the driver headed onto Foothill Drive on the wrong side of the road, forcing oncoming cars to swerve. A sideswipe followed. Moments later, while trying to pass over double yellow lines, the pickup collided head-on with a motorist. “In an attempt to flee this scene, Miguel reversed and then accelerated forward, ramming the victim’s vehicle to push it out of the way,” Sheriff’s Lt. Noah Zarnow said. The victim received medical aid at the scene.
Deputies said the pickup kept going despite heavy damage and a missing front driver’s-side wheel. A second head-on crash followed, this time with a minivan, causing major damage to that vehicle and leaving the driver with minor injuries. With the truck crippled and scraping along the pavement, the driver continued until losing control near the 1600 block of Foothill Drive. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a power pole in a neighborhood not far from the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, where deputies converged and took the suspect into custody. No outages were immediately reported, and crews checked the pole for structural stability.
The Sheriff’s Department said field deputies evaluated the driver for suspected impairment before arresting him on suspicion of DUI and other crimes. Detectives are mapping a damage path spanning about a mile, including the broken hydrant, the destroyed steel gate and multiple vehicles. Officials did not immediately release the exact number of cars damaged. Records show Miguel was on probation at the time of the alleged crimes. He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility early Tuesday and remained there as of midweek.
Vista contracts with the Sheriff’s Department for policing, and the agency’s traffic investigators typically gather surveillance video, download data from vehicle computers and take detailed measurements after major collisions. Deputies are also expected to interview residents along Oak and Foothill drives and collect insurance information from owners whose cars were struck. Officials say they will forward the investigative report to the District Attorney’s Office once evidence is complete, including damage totals and medical reports for those injured.
Miguel faces 19 charges that include driving under the influence, hit-and-run causing injury, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and violating probation. Jail records show his bail set at $555,760 pending arraignment. A court date had not been posted by late week. If prosecutors file the case as described by deputies, the charges would move to Superior Court for a first appearance and possible plea. The Sheriff’s Department said anyone with additional footage or information can contact the Vista station’s traffic unit as the evidence review continues.
By Thursday, deputies said the crash investigation remained active and the power pole had been stabilized. The next expected milestone is an initial court appearance, which could come as early as next week, depending on the filing timeline.
