Prosecutors say an argument over gambling turned fatal inside an apartment near 11th and Atkinson.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A Milwaukee man recently released from prison has been charged after prosecutors said he killed one man and wounded another during an argument over a dice game inside a north side apartment.
Milwaukee County prosecutors charged 38-year-old Marcus Berry with first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree reckless injury and possession of a firearm by a felon. The case has drawn attention because court filings say Berry had served prison time for shooting people after losing money in a different dice game.
Police found 35-year-old Christopher White shot in the head inside an apartment near 11th and Atkinson. A second man had been shot in the arm and shoulder and was taken to a hospital. Court records say the shooting followed a dispute between White and a man identified as Marcus during a dice game. The wounded man told police White was ahead and wanted to stop gambling before the argument turned violent.
A criminal complaint says officers noticed a cellphone on a tripod that appeared to be livestreaming the inside of the apartment. One officer tipped the phone down to preserve evidence. Detectives later spoke with a woman who said she had been watching the livestream when the shooting happened. She told investigators she saw White and a man with braids playing dice before the argument began over about $30 or $40.
Surveillance video cited in court filings showed Berry leaving the apartment that night with what appeared to be a pistol in his hand. Prosecutors said nobody else entered or left the apartment until a woman arrived minutes later, found the victims and called 911. A neighbor told police she heard “pop, pop, pop,” then heard pounding noises and thought White may have fallen from his wheelchair.
Police arrested Berry on April 20 at a home near 40th and Sheridan. During a search, investigators said they found a handgun inside a laundry hamper, clothing matching what Berry appeared to be wearing on surveillance video and two plastic bags with blood on them. Ballistics testing found the gun was consistent with the weapon that fired casings recovered at the shooting scene.
Court filings say Berry had been convicted of multiple felonies after prosecutors accused him of shooting several people at a dice game in 2017. Wisconsin Department of Corrections records listed his release from prison to supervised release on Dec. 30, 2025. He had not yet appeared in court when the charges were reported.
The case now moves through Milwaukee County Circuit Court, where prosecutors are expected to present the complaint and evidence tied to the apartment, surveillance video, livestream and recovered gun.
