Milwaukee, WI – A devastating incident on October 11 has led to charges against 34-year-old Milwaukee resident Olijejuan Jelks. Following a late-night shooting that tragically ended the life of a young mother, Jelks faces accusations of first-degree reckless homicide alongside two related firearm charges.
The event unfolded in a quiet Milwaukee neighborhood, near the intersection of 25th and Kilbourn, where emergency responders rushed following reports of gunfire shortly before 10 p.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered 29-year-old Anita Smith deceased, a grim outcome of the violence that also endangered her infant child.
A witness, who remained at the scene, offered a harrowing account to investigators. According to his statement, moments after Smith and her 10-month-old baby settled to sleep, a series of gunshots erupted. As glass shattered around him, the witness acted swiftly to protect the child, only to realize the grim fate Smith had suffered.
Further investigations revealed the extent of the attack with multiple bullet marks found on the exterior of Smith’s home. At least two bullets had penetrated windows, leading directly to where Smith was fatally injured. Surveillance efforts by the authorities quickly focused on nearby video footage which recorded not just the sound of 10 gunshots but also the perpetrator’s activities before and after the event.
From various camera angles, authorities pieced together the shooter’s movements; spotting him leaving and later returning to an apartment building shortly before and after the shooting. Importantly, video from this location provided clear images of the assailant’s face.
Several days following the violence, a crucial tip pointed to “Mook” as the alleged shooter. This nickname, well-documented in Milwaukee Police Department records, was associated with Jelks, leading to a swift cross-reference with past bookings. It was here that detectives confirmed Jelks’ identity matching that of the individual on the surveillance.
Moreover, Jelks’ entanglement with the law was further detailed by his probation status tied to a previous felony drug conviction, underlining his supervision by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. His probation officer, among others familiar with Jelks, affirmed the match between the man in the video and Jelks himself.
The culmination of this investigation led to a dramatic confrontation on November 1 near 15th and Fond du Lac. As Jelks was approached by law enforcement, an officer observed suspicious movements near his waistband followed by the sound of a metallic object hitting the concrete — a handgun laying beside him moments later.
Currently held in Milwaukee County Jail, Jelks’ bail has been set at $200,000 amidst the ongoing legal proceedings and community reactions to this deeply distressing event that has once again highlighted the pressing issues surrounding gun violence in urban communities.
