MILWAUKEE — A confrontation on a bustling city street escalated rapidly just before noon Wednesday, leading to a Milwaukee police officer, aged 34, being shot and severely wounded on 27th Street, a busy area between Wells Street and Wisconsin Avenue. The incident unfolded when the officer and his colleagues responded to reports of an armed man walking along the street. According to Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, the situation intensified when the man, whose identity is still unknown, refused law enforcement commands to disarm and instead opened fire on the officers. The gunfire resulted in one officer returning shots, which fatally wounded the gunman.
Chief Norman explained that upon arrival, the officers faced a man wielding a substantial firearm. Despite orders to drop the weapon, the man engaged by firing toward the police. This act of aggression triggered an immediate response from the police, leading to the subsequent shooting and death of the assailant.
As the events transpired, a nearby witness captured portions of the confrontation on video, showing the armed individual discharging his weapon into the air. The officer injured in this shootout was promptly transported to Froedtert Hospital, where he underwent surgery for serious injuries sustained during the incident. As of now, the full prognosis of his condition remains unclear. The chief noted the officer’s commendable service of over eight years on the force, highlighting his dedication to public safety.
The officer who neutralized the threat, a 37-year-old with more than eight years of service as well, was placed on administrative duty, a standard procedure following police-involved shootings.
Nearby, a surveillance video from a local business captured the critical moments around the shooting. Police confirmed that a semi-automatic rifle was used in the attack and was recovered at the scene. These details emerged during a press briefing where emotional tensions were palpable.
Milwaukee’s Mayor Cavalier Johnson expressed deep concern for the wounded officer and gratitude toward the police for their bravery under fire. “My thoughts are with that officer,” Johnson stated during the emotionally charged news conference.
Reflecting the community’s shock and solidarity, the Milwaukee Police Association released a heartfelt statement urging residents to keep the injured officer in their prayers and to extend their support to all responding officers who witnessed this traumatic event.
Support from neighboring law enforcement was evident as Marquette University police, among others, assisted at the chaotic scene. In response to the incident, multiple blocks of 27th Street were cordoned off, affecting local businesses and causing significant traffic detours, including closures of parts of Wisconsin Avenue.
The investigation into this violent encounter will be led by the Oak Creek Police Department to ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
