The FBI said Alejandro Jacomino Gonzalez vanished after picking up vehicles at the Port of Brunswick.
BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Federal investigators said a 41-year-old truck driver headed to Miami with a shipment of vehicles was found dead in coastal Georgia after disappearing during a route that began at the Port of Brunswick.
Authorities identified the driver as Alejandro Jacomino Gonzalez, a commercial driver originally from Cuba. The FBI said Gonzalez disappeared under suspicious circumstances after leaving Georgia for South Florida. His death has moved the case from a missing-person search into a joint investigation led by the FBI’s Tampa and Atlanta divisions.
Gonzalez picked up a shipment of cars on April 16 at the Port of Brunswick for delivery to Miami, investigators said. He was last seen early April 17 at the I-95 South Brevard County Rest Area in Grant-Valkaria, Florida. The FBI said GPS information showed the truck continued south briefly before turning north toward Jacksonville. Soon after, Gonzalez could not be reached, and the truck was reported missing.
The truck was found later April 17 in Port Wentworth, Georgia, but Gonzalez was not inside. Several cars were missing from the hauler, investigators said. Three of the missing vehicles were later recovered in Florida. Federal officials have not said where in coastal Georgia Gonzalez’s body was found, when it was recovered or how he died. The FBI said the cause and circumstances of death remain part of the investigation.
Gonzalez’s disappearance drew attention across Florida and Georgia because the route crossed several jurisdictions and involved a commercial vehicle shipment. The case also raised questions about what happened at the Brevard County rest area and why the truck reversed course. Investigators previously focused on the southern part of the rest area near the ramp back onto I-95 South.
The FBI has asked people with information, photos or video from the rest area during the early morning hours of April 17 to contact investigators. The agency described Gonzalez as a bald Hispanic man, 5 feet 11 inches tall and about 200 pounds, with a brown beard and tattoos on both arms.
As of April 30, no arrests had been announced. FBI agents in Tampa and Atlanta are continuing to investigate Gonzalez’s death and the missing vehicles tied to the shipment.
