The shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio on that fateful January night was perpetrated by 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, who caused further terror by attempting an attack at another dance hall, the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in Alhambra. His second plan was thwarted when Brandon Tsay, a quick-thinking young man, confronted and disarmed him, potentially saving numerous lives. Tran ended his own life the following day during a police stop in Torrance.
At the vigil, sentiments of grief and remembrance were echoed by Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, who stressed the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year to the Asian American community, a joyous period that was marred by the tragedy. “Today, I mourn and honor the 11 lives lost and hold their memory close,” stated Chu, empathizing with the victims’ families and survivors who are navigating through ongoing trauma resulting from the incident.
