Investigators say surveillance recordings and community tips helped identify the two men accused in the Bare Cabaret parking lot killings.
AUSTIN, Texas — Two men are being held in the Travis County Jail on capital murder charges after surrendering in connection with a shooting that killed two people outside Bare Cabaret in northeast Travis County.
James Mackeise Shearrion, 19, and Kevin Curtis Parrish, 20, are each charged with capital murder of multiple persons. Parrish surrendered Saturday, July 11, and Shearrion turned himself in Monday, July 13, according to authorities and jail records. The charges are allegations, and court records do not show that either man has been convicted in the case.
The shooting happened shortly before 4 a.m. July 5 in the parking lot of Bare Cabaret at 9705 Reservoir Court. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office identified the people killed as Layla Williamson, 19, and VT Wood-Davion Olden Hornsby, 23, both of Austin. Hornsby died at the scene, while Williamson was taken to a hospital and later died, authorities said.
Investigators said a dispute in a crowded parking lot escalated into gunfire. About 400 people were believed to be inside the club and in the surrounding parking area at the time, creating a difficult scene for deputies as they separated witnesses and began collecting evidence.
An arrest affidavit says investigators obtained surveillance recordings from businesses near the club. One recording allegedly showed three people approaching the victims from the Bare Cabaret parking lot. Two of those people appeared to draw firearms and fire several rounds before the group ran toward a dark sport utility vehicle and left, according to the affidavit.
Detectives later reviewed additional video from a nearby fireworks business. Court records allege the footage showed Shearrion running toward the driver’s side of a black four-door Genesis while holding a gun. Parrish was allegedly recorded entering the passenger side. Investigators said clothing worn by the men appeared to match clothing visible in social media posts made around July 4.
The affidavit says detectives also received anonymous community tips identifying people known as James and Kevin as possible shooters. Investigators then worked with Austin Independent School District police, who identified the men as Shearrion and Parrish, according to the court filing. The affidavit said both were known to district officers through previous investigations.
Court records describe the shooting as possibly connected to a dispute involving rival groups. That possible motive remains an allegation contained in the investigative documents and has not been established in court. The sheriff’s office has said the people involved knew one another and that investigators do not believe the shooting created an ongoing threat to the public.
Precious Josslyn Shearrion, 38, James Shearrion’s mother, also surrendered Monday. She is charged with hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence in connection with the investigation. Authorities previously said they believed she may have helped her son avoid arrest. She also has not been convicted of the allegations against her.
Parrish had faced earlier Travis County cases involving allegations of unlawfully carrying a weapon, possessing a prohibited weapon and evading arrest, according to court records. He was participating in a diversion program at the time of the July 5 shooting. Such a program may allow a participant to avoid prosecution in an earlier case by completing requirements set through the court process.
The sheriff’s office said the double-homicide investigation remains active and that additional charges or arrests are possible. No trial dates or other upcoming court proceedings for the three defendants had been publicly announced as of Wednesday.
