LONDON, ENGLAND – A woman has been found guilty of murder after drowning her two young sons and placing their bodies in their beds for their father to discover. The tragic case has left the community of East London in shock and disbelief.
In a recent court hearing, it was revealed that 47-year-old Cara Alexander, who lived in London, drowned her sons, 2-year-old Elijah, also known as Teddy, and 5-year-old Marley. The boys were found lifeless in their bunk bed in December 2022. Their father, Selvin Thomas, made the devastating discovery when he visited the home after not hearing from Alexander.
The case has gained significant attention as the court awaits psychiatric evaluations before sentencing Alexander. Although she faces life imprisonment, the reports might influence the final decision. The judge at Kingston Crown Court has scheduled her sentencing for April.
Details emerged that Alexander and Thomas had ended their relationship a few months prior, prompting her to relocate with the children to Dagenham in East London. Thomas, who was supposed to spend the weekend with his sons, grew concerned when Alexander did not make contact. Upon arriving at the residence, Alexander initially refused him entry, claiming the boys were asleep.
Prosecutors explained that when Thomas insisted on entering, he found the door barricaded with toys. Once inside, he discovered his sons in their pajamas, cold and unresponsive. In a state of panic, Thomas accused Alexander of killing their children.
Alexander was not present at the scene when Thomas made the discovery, but authorities apprehended her shortly afterward. During questioning, she claimed she had left the boys unattended in the bathtub while she smoked cannabis and fell asleep. Despite her statements, she denied any intention to harm them.
The emotional 999 call, similar to the 911 emergency number in the United States, was played for the jury. Thomas described the heartbreaking moment he found his children and Alexander’s attempts to flee. Prosecutors stated that Alexander tried to escape through neighboring yards before being captured by police.
The case has sparked discussions on the importance of mental health assessments in legal proceedings, as the court seeks to understand Alexander’s state of mind during the incident. The community remains in mourning as they process the loss of two innocent lives.
