A man was rescued from the first floor as crews searched for another child.
CLARKSVILLE, Ohio — A mother and four children were found dead after an early morning house fire swept through a home on Main Street Tuesday, and officials said one more child might still be unaccounted for as investigators worked to determine what sparked the blaze.
Firefighters were called to the 100 block of Main Street around 6:40 a.m. and arrived to heavy flames and smoke, according to county emergency officials. Crews managed to reach the first floor and pull an adult man from the home, but fire conditions and damage inside made it difficult to access the second floor, where victims were later located.
The call for help came just after sunrise in a village of only a few hundred residents, turning a routine weekday morning into a fast-moving emergency response. Clinton County Emergency Management Agency Director Thomas Breckel said crews began water suppression almost immediately and tried to push into the structure. A man believed to be the children’s father was found in the kitchen and taken to a hospital, Breckel said. By late morning, officials said four children, including an infant, and their mother had died. The identities and ages of the victims were not released as officials worked to notify relatives and confirm details.
As fire trucks and ambulances converged on Main Street, responders faced a dangerous interior. Breckel said firefighters were able to enter the first floor, but the conditions upstairs deteriorated quickly. In some accounts provided by local officials, the stairwell to the second floor had collapsed, limiting access and forcing crews to look for other ways to reach the upper level. When firefighters were finally able to assess the second floor, they located the mother and children, officials said. “This is a gut punch,” Breckel said, describing the impact on the close-knit community where neighbors recognize one another by name. Officials said the adult man rescued from the home was hospitalized, and the extent of his injuries was not immediately known.
Beyond the confirmed deaths, authorities said they were working to determine whether another child had been inside the home when the fire started. Breckel said a fifth child was believed to be unaccounted for, but officials had not confirmed whether that child was a member of the family or someone staying at the home. “I don’t know if that’s a member of the family, I don’t know if it was someone staying over,” Breckel said, adding that information was still coming in during the first hours of the response. The uncertainty set off a careful accounting effort as crews coordinated with investigators and searched for more definitive information about who was in the home.
Eight firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, officials said. They were treated and were expected to be OK, according to county emergency officials. The injuries underscored the risks of a fast, hot house fire in a structure already compromised by smoke and heat. As the flames were brought under control, responders maintained a perimeter on Main Street, keeping people back while investigators assessed the scene. Officials said the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to assist, signaling a shift from rescue and suppression to determining how the fire began and how it spread through the home.
Across the street, residents watched from their yards and sidewalks, trying to make sense of what happened. Jasmine Moore, who said she lives across from the home, described noticing emergency lights around 6:45 a.m. and stepping outside to see the house on fire. She said the first fire truck arrived quickly, and more departments followed in a steady stream. “From there several other departments showed up and started fighting the fire with them,” Moore said. In a town with a single stoplight, the loss was immediate and personal, and neighbors shared what they saw while awaiting official word about the victims and the investigation.
Officials said the cause of the fire was not known Tuesday and the investigation was continuing as crews worked to confirm whether an additional child was inside. The next update was expected after investigators complete a preliminary examination of the scene and officials finish confirming the list of occupants.
