Neighbors Wake to Rapid Gunfire as Mustang Is Shot Up

A Ford Mustang with shattered windows and bullet damage was towed from the scene Friday morning.

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies spent Friday morning investigating an overnight shooting in a residential North Lauderdale neighborhood after a Ford Mustang was struck by multiple rounds near Southwest Seventh Court.

Investigators remained in the 7900 block of Southwest Seventh Court for several hours after residents reported hearing rapid gunfire around 1 a.m. Evidence markers were placed across the roadway and near the damaged vehicle while detectives documented the scene before the Mustang was towed away. Deputies had not publicly confirmed whether anyone was injured or identified possible suspects by late Friday morning.

Neighbors described waking to loud bursts of gunfire that echoed through the neighborhood during the early morning hours. One resident told reporters he had just returned home from work and had fallen asleep shortly before hearing what sounded like repeated shots outside. “It woke me up immediately,” the man said. “It sounded like they were emptying magazines.” Residents stepped outside moments later and saw deputies arriving in the area as emergency lights filled the street.

The Mustang appeared to have sustained significant damage on the driver’s side. Investigators observed shattered glass scattered across the pavement and visible bullet damage near the driver’s side window, which had been blown out during the shooting. Bloody bandages and medical supplies could also be seen near the vehicle Friday morning, though authorities did not immediately explain whether someone had been treated at the scene or transported to a hospital. Deputies cordoned off part of the block while crime scene investigators photographed evidence and searched the area for shell casings.

Residents in the neighborhood said the area is usually quiet overnight, making the sudden eruption of gunfire especially alarming. Several neighbors gathered outside their homes Friday morning as deputies continued their investigation. Some residents said they initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks before hearing multiple additional shots. Others described hearing tires screeching shortly after the shooting occurred. Authorities have not yet said whether investigators believe the shooting was targeted or random.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has not released details about how many people may have been inside the Mustang when shots were fired or whether investigators are searching for multiple suspects. Detectives also have not disclosed whether surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses captured the incident. Crime scene technicians continued examining the roadway and nearby properties for additional evidence throughout the morning as deputies interviewed residents who reported hearing or seeing suspicious activity overnight.

Gun violence investigations in Broward County often require detectives to analyze shell casing evidence, vehicle damage patterns and witness accounts before determining a motive. In residential shootings, investigators also typically canvass homes for security camera footage that may show vehicles entering or leaving the area before or after gunfire erupts. Friday’s investigation temporarily disrupted the neighborhood as residents navigated around police tape and marked evidence zones while deputies worked to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Neighbors said the heavy police presence remained in place well after sunrise as investigators methodically documented the scene. Tow truck operators eventually removed the damaged Mustang while detectives continued speaking with residents nearby. “You never expect something like this right outside your home,” one woman said while watching deputies collect evidence. Several residents remained outside throughout the morning waiting for updates from law enforcement.

As of Friday afternoon, the Broward Sheriff’s Office had not announced arrests or confirmed whether anyone had been hospitalized. Detectives were expected to continue reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses as the investigation moves forward.
