New Details Emerge in Shocking Saratoga Springs Double Homicide Case Involving Mother and Son, Raising Alarming Questions About Teen’s Role

SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah — New information has emerged from recently unsealed search warrants related to the tragic double homicide of a mother and her young son in March. Jessica Lyman, 39, and her 8-year-old son Eli Painter were discovered shot in their home on March 28, with Eli pronounced dead at the scene and his mother succumbing to her injuries later at a hospital.

The investigation has largely remained under wraps until now, but newly released documents provide insight into the circumstances surrounding the case. Key among the findings are details regarding Lyman’s 15-year-old son, who was present at the crime scene and is a focal point in the ongoing investigation.

The warrants reveal troubling evidence collected from the teenager’s bedroom. According to investigators, the teen informed them that he had been using his cell phone late into the night on the day of the murders. A review of his messages uncovered hostile exchanges, including a particularly disturbing remark in which he expressed a wish for his own demise connected to his mother. Additionally, police discovered a handwritten note in his room referencing various forensic elements, as well as a distinct message indicating, “This is a murder story.”

Clothing identified as belonging to Jessica was also found among the teen’s possessions, raising further questions about the scene. Investigators uncovered a white mask that resembled one seen in surveillance footage from a neighbor, which adds a layer of complexity to the investigation.

Surveillance videos have provided additional leads. Footage from a nearby property captured an individual donning a white mask before vanishing from view near the Lyman home. A subsequent clip recorded a figure exiting the scene through a gap in a fence around 2:30 a.m. and returning roughly thirty minutes later, suggesting possible suspicious activity.

An autopsy conducted on Eli confirmed he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, while Jessica, who was also shot in the head, succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital. Medical professionals have noted their concern over the conditions in which Jessica was discovered, with potential DNA and other biological evidence found on the victim.

Despite extensive searches of the house and the adjacent Jordan River, authorities have yet to recover the murder weapon, leaving investigators with a significant gap in the case.

Inquiries directed at the Saratoga Springs Police regarding the current status of the 15-year-old have gone unanswered as the department continues its investigation. The case remains fluid and developments are anticipated as more information is uncovered.
