New Study Links One-Fifth of Pulmonary Fibrosis Deaths to Job-Related Exposures

WASHINGTON — New research indicates that approximately 21% of the deaths caused by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) may be linked to occupational exposures. This emerging statistic brings critical attention to the potential hazards within workplace environments across various industries.

The study, recently published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, examined mortality data from 2020 to 2022, focusing specifically on workers affected by IPF, a progressive and usually fatal disease that causes scarring of the lungs. The data further indicated that among IPF mortality rates by occupation, community and social services workers for men and farming, fishing, and forestry workers for women were most at risk. These roles traditionally involve exposure to a range of dust, chemicals, and other fibrotic agents capable of lung damage over time.
