Wellington, New Zealand — Authorities in New Zealand have launched an investigation into a disturbing incident captured on video, which shows a teenage boy allegedly abusing a live octopus on a local beach. The footage, which was reportedly uploaded to the teen’s Instagram account, has sparked significant public outrage and prompted action from several animal welfare organizations.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) confirmed receiving numerous complaints concerning the video’s content, prompting an official statement condemning the actions depicted. “The behavior in the video is unacceptable, and we will be making inquiries,” an MPI spokesperson stated.
New Zealand Police also reported receiving an online complaint about the incident on January 25, the same day the video was thought to have been posted on social media. The images apparently show the young individual repeatedly striking the marine creature, leading many viewers to express their shock and dismay online.
SAFE, a leading animal welfare organization in New Zealand, has been vocally critical of the teenager’s actions. Debra Ashton, Chief Executive of SAFE, described the footage as a “senseless, disturbing and violent attack on an innocent sea creature.” Ashton confirmed that SAFE has formally lodged a complaint with MPI, advocating for a thorough investigation in hopes that the individuals involved will be held accountable.
“We hope that members of the public will come forward to help identify these individuals so that they can be held to account for their actions,” Ashton added, highlighting a broader community concern over potential future incidents.
The video’s emergence has also led to scrutiny concerning the affiliations of the individuals involved, though links to local organizations like the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club seem to be unfounded. A spokesperson from the club acknowledged being aware of the video but denied any association with the persons in the recording. Further inquiries are being deferred to the club’s committee.
Meanwhile, MPI is yet to determine the next steps in their investigation, but the video has already triggered a wider discussion on animal cruelty laws and the need for tougher enforcement in cases involving harm to marine life. The Department of Conservation, while not directly involved in this case, has also been alerted about the incident, although they have not issued a statement.
The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has also been approached for comment regarding the incident, reflecting widespread concern across various sectors about protecting wildlife from abuse.
