NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — A tragic incident unfolded just outside a popular shopping center in Newport Beach when a 68-year-old woman from New Youthland, visiting with her husband, became the fatal victim of a violent robbery. The couple was attacked near Fashion Island mall, a typically bustling area known for its upscale shops and scenic views.
According to the Newport Beach Police Department, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The couple was approached by two male assailants, one of whom was reportedly armed with a handgun. A struggle ensued, during which the woman was forcibly dragged into the street.
Sgt. Steve Oberon of the Newport Beach Police described the scene as chaotic and violent, with the attackers showing blatant disregard for human life. In a shocking development during the robbery, a third accompone, driving a white Toyota Camry, struck the woman, leading to fatal injuries.
Further escalating the situation, a member of the trio discharged a firearm three times, adding to the panic and fear among bystanders. The woman was pronounced dead at the site, near the parking lot of a Barnes and Noble bookstore, marking a stark contrast to the peaceful shopping environment.
Beau Bayless, a bystander who witnessed the attack and attempted to intervene, expressed his horror at the unfolding situation. “I felt so terrible for that woman. It just wasn’t right,” Bayless said, recounting how one of the suspects shot at him as he tried to help the couple.
The suspects fled the scene, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that extended into Los Angeles County. The chase concluded in South Gate, where aerial footage captured two men abandoning the vehicle and attempting to hide from police officers.
Following a swift investigation, authorities apprehended all three men involved in the incident. They have been identified as Joseph McCrary Leroyernest, 26, of Compton; Jaden Cunningham, 18, of Lancaster; and Edward Darnell Malachi, 18, of Los Angeles. They are currently being held in connection with the fatal robbery and ensuing chaos.
The violent robbery led to an immediate response from local law enforcement and community leaders. As the investigation continued into the evening, police cordoned off the area, urging the public to steer clear while they processed the crime scene. Shoppers like Rachel West found themselves unexpectedly caught in a lockdown. “I expected to go and fix my sunglasses,” West said. “I didn’t know that there was going to be a crime scene and a dead body when I got here.”
Mayor Will O’Neill of Newport Beach expressed his condolences and anger over the crime. “I’m horrified. I’m mourning the loss of someone who died inside of our city because of a crime,” O’Neill stated. “This is a tragedy, and I’m furious.”
