Norwich, England — Two friends were viciously attacked on Prince of Wales Road, previously labeled by law enforcement as a particularly dangerous area. Ionut Buzdugan and his companion Stephan Rusu were on their way to get food in the early hours of April 6 when they encountered two teenagers armed with knives.
The attackers, 18-year-old Iwo Grudowski and a 17-year-old whose identity remains protected due to legal restrictions, struck swiftly, leaving both victims with severe, life-altering injuries. Rusu, who later returned to Romania, suffered multiple stab wounds to his torso, resulting in the surgical removal of a portion of his intestine. Buzdugan sustained a serious head injury, which has left him with an open wound that continues to require ongoing medical treatment.
In September, Grudowski was acquitted of attempted murder but confessed to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing a knife. He was subsequently sentenced to 40 months in a Young Offenders Institution. The younger teen also admitted to grievous bodily harm and possession charges, receiving a Youth Rehabilitation Order that includes a six-month curfew, required supervision, and 140 hours of community service.
Prior to sentencing at King’s Lynn Crown Court, Buzdugan addressed the court, describing the persistent physical and psychological pain stemming from the attack. He shared the ongoing struggles with his injuries, detailing how he finds it difficult to move his neck and must visit his doctor weekly for dressing changes. A skin graft may be necessary to heal the open wound on the side of his head, a prospect that terrifies him due to his long-standing fear of medical procedures.
Haunted by memories of the incident, Buzdugan expressed regret, unnecessarily blaming himself for not preventing the assault. He vividly recalls the image of Rusu being stabbed, a thought that torments him daily. The trauma has taken a significant toll on his life, leaving him unable to work and causing considerable financial strain.
Detective Constable Adam Ruskin commended the victims for their unwavering support throughout the legal proceedings, emphasizing the spontaneous and unprovoked nature of the crime. The incident not only distressed the victims but also left bystanders traumatized.
The defense for the 17-year-old, represented by Michael Clare, contended that intoxication influenced his client’s behavior during the incident. The teen, with no prior convictions, had been complying with an electronically monitored curfew in the lead-up to his sentencing. Grudowski’s lawyer, Jonathan Goodman, represented him throughout the trial and sentencing phases, underscoring the complexities surrounding the case.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this violent episode, the emotional and physical scars left on the victims serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked aggression. Both Buzdugan and Rusu face a long and difficult road to recovery, and the impact of that fateful night will continue to resonate through their lives.
