Nine Arrested After Violent Mob Attack on Police Officers in Jirapa, Weapons Recovered

JIRAPA, Ghana — Authorities have apprehended nine individuals in connection with a violent attack on police officers in the Saawie community, located in the Upper West Region. The incident took place on December 5, when a group estimated to be around 30 individuals confronted officers who were conducting inquiries, resulting in injuries to the officers and the theft of four service weapons.

Francis K. Viribaare, the Regional Police Commander, detailed the events in a statement released on December 7. The assault left the officers vulnerable and prompted immediate reinforcements led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Francis Yiribaare to the area to ensure the safety of the injured personnel.

In a concerted effort, the police managed to reclaim all stolen weapons, though two magazines remain unaccounted for. The swift response was critical, as it not only involved recovering the law enforcement tools but also ensuring the well-being of the officers who faced the attack.

The police have emphasized the severity of the incident, urging community members to assist in ongoing investigations. “Such acts of violence against law enforcement personnel will not be tolerated,” said Viribaare. “We are committed to maintaining safety and security for both our officers and the communities we serve.”

The arrests represent a significant step in addressing the violence that has raised alarm in the region. Law enforcement agencies are working diligently to uphold public safety and restore confidence among the citizens of Jirapa municipality.

The police’s call for cooperation from residents underscores the importance of community involvement in combating crime. As investigations continue, authorities are hopeful that further assistance from locals will lead to additional arrests and a clearer understanding of the motivations behind this assault.

The attack highlights ongoing tensions between criminal elements and law enforcement in the region, prompting officials to bolster their presence and response capabilities. With the promise of decisive action against such violence, the Upper West Regional Police Command is striving to enhance security measures for the protection of both officers and the public at large.
