Nottingham, England — A man known as “The Incredible Hulk” was sentenced to prison for violently assaulting a woman who had offered him shelter following his release from prison. Andrew Gray, 43, was found guilty of subjecting his victim to a series of brutal attacks marked by physical violence and intimidation.
During recent hearings at Nottingham Crown Court, it was revealed that Gray attacked the woman after she returned home from a memorial service for her father. Following an argument, he escalated the situation by dragging her by her hair and slamming her head against the walls of her bedroom. After the assault, Gray refused to allow her medical treatment for her injuries, opting instead to use tape to cover the wounds he had inflicted.
The ordeal did not end there. A month later, after consuming alcohol, Gray again turned violent, kicking the woman in the ribs and striking her face multiple times before fleeing the scene. At the time of these incidents, Gray had only recently completed a six-year sentence for a previous robbery where he threatened a woman with a machete while her child was present.
Prosecutor David Allan noted the profound impact the assaults had on the victim. In her victim impact statement, she described ongoing nightmares and a pervasive fear of Gray, comparing his outbursts to that of the comic book character known for his rage and strength. This sense of fear prompted her to seek safety with assistance from local authorities.
Gray, who has a lengthy criminal history including 45 prior offenses, was ultimately sentenced to two years and nine months in prison. Judge Philip Head emphasized the role of alcohol in Gray’s violent behavior, describing the attacks as a “gross abuse” of the victim’s kindness and hospitality. The judge stated that Gray had failed to take responsibility for his actions, choosing instead to inflict harm on someone who had shown him compassion.
In court, Gray’s defense attorney, Lucky Thandi, stated that her client has been grappling with alcohol addiction for many years but has a support network of family and friends. She argued that he has the potential to change but must confront his destructive behavior alone.
In addition to the prison sentence, the judge issued a three-and-a-half-year restraining order against Gray, preventing him from contacting the victim. This decision reflects not only the severity of his actions but also the court’s commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence.
