Oakland, Calif. — A man with a history of felony convictions has been charged in connection with a shooting that left one person dead and another injured early Thursday morning in the Dimond district. Authorities announced charges against 45-year-old Rolls Royce Mitchell on Friday amidst an ongoing investigation into the incident.
Mitchell faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. He is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. Following his arrest, Mitchell is currently being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail and is set for arraignment on Monday.
The shooting, which occurred around 12:41 a.m. in the 3100 block of MacArthur Boulevard, resulted in the death of 49-year-old Rickie Campbell. Another man, also aged 49, suffered injuries but managed to reach a hospital for treatment. The police have confirmed that the two men were acquaintances, though it remains unclear if Mitchell was known to them.
Witnesses reported hearing approximately 15 gunshots during the incident. Authorities indicated that both victims had been at a nearby club prior to the shooting, but the motive remains undetermined.
Mitchell fled the scene before officers arrived, but he was apprehended about six hours later in Oakland. Law enforcement officials cited witness testimonies, surveillance footage, and other evidence as key factors in identifying him as the shooter.
Court documents reveal Mitchell’s extensive criminal background, which includes five felony convictions in Alameda County from 1999 to 2011. His prior offenses include assault with a deadly weapon and drug-related charges, for which he was placed on probation.
As the investigation continues, the community is grappling with the impact of violence in their neighborhood. Local authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward, hoping to clarify what led to this tragic event.
