Ocean County Son Faces 10 Years in Prison After Pleading Guilty to Attempted Murder of His 71-Year-Old Mother

MANCHESTER, N.J. — An Ocean County man faces a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to a brutal attack on his mother that left her critically injured. Joseph Cavallaro, 45, pleaded guilty to attempted murder on January 30, acknowledging that he intended to kill his 71-year-old mother during the assault.

The violent incident occurred on June 27, 2025, at the Pine Acres Manor Mobile Home Community. Local authorities responded to a distress call and found the elderly woman with severe injuries. She was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where she initially remained in critical condition. Although she has since recovered enough to be discharged, the attack has left lasting repercussions.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Cavallaro and his mother had engaged in an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation. Cavallaro reportedly assaulted her using a cane, inflicting numerous injuries, including a fractured skull, broken ribs, and facial fractures. The official circumstances surrounding their dispute have not been disclosed.

Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer characterized the incident as an alarming case of domestic violence. He emphasized that such acts are intolerable and that the justice system must hold the perpetrator accountable. Cavallaro was taken into custody shortly after the incident and has remained in the Ocean County Jail for the past seven months.

During the court proceedings, Cavallaro admitted he had the intent to kill his mother, further underscoring the severity of his actions. The prosecution is aiming for a ten-year prison sentence, which could serve as a deterrent against similar acts of violence in domestic settings.

Sentencing is set for March 26, 2026, as the court prepares to address the ramifications of this case. Community members are left to grapple with the unsettling reality of violence within families, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and preventive measures.
