Point Lisas, Trinidad and Tobago – In the early hours of Wednesday, a police constable was compelled to fire his weapon into the air to disperse a crowd during a violent confrontation at a local car park. The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m. at the Olympus and Rampy’s Bar Car Park, involved about 300 people, some of whom were reportedly assaulting a man.
The officer, who is assigned to the Special Branch IT of the local police force, was at the scene when he noticed the large gathering. His attention was drawn to a smaller group of apparently intoxicated men who were physically attacking another individual. Despite his calls for backup to the E999 Command Centre, the officer took immediate action upon seeing the situation escalate.
Identifying himself as a police officer, he issued commands to cease the assault. When his orders were ignored and believing the victim’s life to be in danger, he drew his licensed Glock pistol. To disperse the aggressive crowd, he discharged three rounds of 9mm ammunition into the air.
The intervention was effective, and the crowd quickly dispersed, although the assaulted man, an 18-year-old from Bagna Trace, Chase Village, required medical attention. Bystanders transported him to the Couva Health Facility where he received treatment for a head injury. At the time, his condition prevented him from giving a statement to the authorities, due to his high level of intoxication.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police seized the constable’s firearm for investigation. Along with the Glock pistol, officials collected his Firearm User’s License card, three magazines (two of which were found to be defective), 17 rounds of ammunition, and a defaced FUL booklet. This standard procedure aims to ensure a thorough investigation into the discharge of the weapon and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As of now, the investigation is being supervised by PC Kalloo, and authorities are meticulously combing through the details to determine the next steps. The focus remains on not just the officer’s use of the firearm but also on the overall security measures in place at public gatherings.
This event casts a light on the challenges law enforcement faces in managing large crowds and public altercations, especially in areas known for nightlife and gatherings. Such incidents raise questions about the adequacy of current police training and resources when confronted with volatile situations that escalate quickly.
The local community and authorities are awaiting the results of the ongoing investigation, which will likely influence future protocols in handling similar incidents to better ensure public safety and the appropriate use of police authority.
