SALEM, MA – In a case fraught with controversy, a North Andover police officer has appeared in court via Zoom, facing serious charges after a confrontation with her colleagues. Kelsey Fitzsimmons, 28, is accused of armed assault with intent to murder, but her attorneys argue that the situation has been mischaracterized.
The incident took place on June 30, when officers went to Fitzsimmons’ home to issue a restraining order from her fiancĂ©, concerned about their infant’s safety. Fitzsimmons, dealing with postpartum depression, had already sought mental health support.
Her defense argues that Fitzsimmons’ mental health issues were temporary and that she is now stable. They contend she should be released on bail, framing the case as a misunderstanding rather than a criminal act.
According to reports, the encounter escalated when Fitzsimmons allegedly reached for her service weapon, resulting in her being shot. Her legal team insists she never intended to harm anyone.
Fitzsimmons is recovering and engaged in a custody battle. Her defense, which includes former Attorney General Martha Coakley, is focused on ensuring her story is fully represented.
Prosecutors, however, maintain that Fitzsimmons remains a threat, despite being cleared to return to her duties. They argue against bail, highlighting the potential danger.
The case underscores the challenges of navigating mental health issues within the law enforcement field, as differing narratives emerge.
