Authorities said officers arrived to find a woman being stabbed and later learned a man had already been shot dead.
CHESTER, Pa. — Chester police shot and killed a man early Wednesday after officers entered a Barclay Street home and found him stabbing a woman, authorities said, in an attack that also left another man dead and a second woman hurt.
Officials said the violence unfolded just after midnight in the 900 block of Barclay Street and quickly turned into a triple-fatality case that is now being investigated on two tracks. Delaware County detectives are handling the deaths inside the home, while the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the police gunfire that killed the suspect. Authorities said there is no continuing threat to the public.
According to the City of Chester, officers were sent to the house at about 12:02 a.m. after a report of a disorderly person. When they got there, police encountered what the city later called an active and rapidly evolving scene inside the residence. NBC10 reported that officers found a man in the middle of stabbing a woman. Police ordered him to stop, but he kept attacking her, according to officials. A responding officer then fired, killing the suspect. The woman who was being attacked was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later found another man inside the home who had been fatally shot before officers arrived. By the end of the response, two adult men, including the suspect, and one adult woman had died.
Authorities have not publicly released the names of the dead or identified the suspect in the public statements available Wednesday and Thursday. The city said a second adult woman suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment. Police also said they had not yet explained what led to the violence inside the house. That left major questions unanswered, including the relationships among the people in the home, whether the 911 caller was inside the residence, and how long the attack had been underway before officers arrived. Local television reporting said investigators believe the suspect had both a knife and a gun during the incident. Officials have not publicly said how many shots police fired or whether body-camera video exists.
The case drew attention across Chester because of both the speed of the violence and the number of victims inside a single rowhome block in the city. The 900 block of Barclay Street became a crime scene in the early hours of April 1 as officers, investigators and emergency crews gathered outside. Mayor Stefan Roots said in a statement that the night had “destroyed a family,” traumatized the neighborhood and shaken the wider community. He praised officers for responding quickly and said the city had support resources available for people dealing with trauma, domestic abuse or mental health crises. While officials have not publicly described the episode as domestic violence in a charging document or court filing, their statements pointed to a family-centered tragedy with lasting effects beyond the home itself.
The investigation remains open. The City of Chester said the broader criminal inquiry was turned over to the Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division, while the review of the officer’s weapon discharge is being handled by the district attorney’s Special Investigations Unit. That is a common split in cases where police gunfire occurs during a larger violent crime scene. No charges can be filed against the suspect because he died at the scene, but investigators still must determine the sequence of events, recover weapons, process forensic evidence and complete autopsies. Officials also have not announced any timetable for releasing names, discussing evidence in detail or saying whether additional witnesses will speak publicly. The district attorney’s office is expected to control further updates on the shooting review.
Another detail deepened the sense of shock in the neighborhood: Brandywine Valley SPCA said a dog named Diamond was also critically wounded during the violence and had been shot in the face. The group said the dog was rushed for emergency veterinary care and stabilized, but her long-term outlook was still uncertain. The account added another grim layer to an already chaotic scene that neighbors and viewers across the region were still trying to understand. The block was left with police tape, scattered questions and a family loss that city leaders said would not fade quickly. Roots said the community had been shaken, and the available facts supported that picture: a man dead before police arrived, a woman attacked in front of officers and a suspect killed moments later as police tried to stop the stabbing.
As of Thursday, authorities had released only a basic outline of what happened inside the home and had not publicly identified the dead. The next milestone is expected to be additional information from Delaware County investigators or prosecutors as the homicide and police-shooting reviews continue.
