Atlanta police said the shooting happened inside a Midtown apartment Monday evening, and investigators had not announced an arrest by late night.
ATLANTA, Ga. — One man died and two other people were injured after a shooting inside an apartment on Atlantic Station property Monday evening, prompting a homicide investigation in one of Atlanta’s busiest shopping and residential districts.
Police said officers were sent to 230 18th St. NW at about 5:47 p.m. after reports of multiple people being shot. When they arrived, officers found three adults with gunshot wounds inside the apartment. A 23-year-old man was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died. A 32-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were also taken to a hospital, where police said both were alert, conscious and breathing.
The shooting drew a large police response near the intersection of 18th Street NW and Market Street NW as investigators worked into the evening behind crime scene tape. Atlanta police said the gunfire was believed to be isolated and took place inside an apartment unit, not in the open-air retail area that draws shoppers and diners to Atlantic Station. Homicide investigators were called in to determine what led to the violence. By late Monday, police had not released the name of the man who died, and officials said they were still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Authorities gave only a limited public account of what happened before the shots were fired. Police said the relationship among the three people who were shot had not been confirmed, and investigators had not said whether they all lived in the apartment or had gathered there before the shooting. Officials also had not said whether the victims were the intended targets. A round also passed through a wall into an adjacent apartment, according to police and local television reports, but that unit was vacant and no one inside was hurt. Police had not said late Monday whether the shooter remained at large, left on foot or by car, or had been detained and released.
The location of the shooting added to the attention on the case because Atlantic Station is one of Midtown’s best-known mixed-use developments, with apartments, offices, restaurants and national retailers packed into a walkable district west of the Downtown Connector. The apartment building involved sits on Atlantic Station property, though one local report said it is not managed by Atlantic Station itself. The scene unfolded just before the evening rush of shoppers, residents and restaurant traffic, turning a normally busy corridor into an active crime scene. Patrol cars blocked access while detectives canvassed for witnesses, looked for surveillance video and searched for physical evidence inside and around the building.
As of late Monday, no charges had been announced and no arrest had been publicly confirmed. Police said the investigation remained active, with homicide detectives leading the case. The next steps are expected to include witness interviews, a review of surveillance footage from the building and surrounding district, and forensic work tied to the apartment where the shooting happened. Investigators also are expected to notify the dead man’s family before releasing his identity. Any additional details about a suspect, a motive or possible charges are likely to come in a follow-up statement from the Atlanta Police Department after detectives complete more interviews and evidence review.
Outside the apartment complex, the contrast was sharp. Atlantic Station is usually filled with people heading to dinner, shopping or walking between parking decks and residential buildings. On Monday night, flashing blue lights reflected off nearby storefront windows while yellow tape cut across part of the block. Residents and bystanders watched from a distance as officers moved in and out of the building. Lt. Christapher Butler of the homicide unit gave preliminary remarks at the scene, and police said the information released Monday night could change as the investigation continues. For now, the unanswered questions outnumber the confirmed details.
The case remained under investigation late Monday night, with police still trying to piece together what happened inside the apartment and whether any suspect had been identified. The next public update is expected after detectives complete additional interviews and notify the dead man’s relatives.
