Oxnard, California — A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to nearly 19 years in state prison for sexually assaulting a female truck driver in an industrial area of Oxnard. Jose Luis Meza Jr. received an 18-year, 8-month sentence following his guilty plea to charges of assault with intent to commit rape and forcible oral copulation, along with several aggravating allegations, including a prior strike offense.
The incident occurred on September 14, 2020, when the victim was asleep in her truck. Meza entered her vehicle, demanding money before physically restraining her and committing the assault. Despite her traumatic experience, the victim fought back and successfully escaped, seeking refuge at a nearby business.
Investigation efforts quickly led law enforcement to crucial evidence. Surveillance footage from the area captured Meza exiting the victim’s truck while wearing a bright yellow sweatshirt and discarding a water bottle. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office later analyzed the bottle and identified DNA matching Meza’s. Eyewitness accounts confirmed he had been spotted in the same yellow sweatshirt in unrelated incidents surrounding the time of the assault.
The case was pursued by Chief Deputy District Attorney Brent Nibecker, who praised the contributions of forensic scientists from the Sheriff’s Forensic Services Bureau. Their work was instrumental in linking Meza to the crime and bringing justice to the victim.
District Attorney Investigator Greg Webb played a key role in the investigation, collaborating closely with the Oxnard Police Department. Meza was ultimately arrested on August 13, 2024, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in addressing violent crimes.
