The shooting near Conifer shut southbound lanes as deputies searched for a light-colored Subaru.
CONIFER, Colo. — A passenger was shot in the head during an apparent road rage encounter on Highway 285 around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, forcing a shutdown of the southbound lanes near Sourdough Drive while Jefferson County deputies investigated.
Officials said the incident began as reports of a single-vehicle crash involving a black SUV near the Highway 285 corridor by Settlers Drive. When first responders arrived, they found evidence of gunfire and a wounded passenger who was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery. By Wednesday morning, deputies said the victim was in critical but stable condition. The Sheriff’s Office has opened a criminal investigation and is asking drivers who were in the area at that time to contact detectives with information or dash camera video. No arrests had been announced as of Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies closed the southbound lanes of Highway 285 near Sourdough Drive shortly after 7 p.m. while crime scene technicians documented the roadway and searched for shell casings and other physical evidence. The black SUV involved in the crash remained at the scene as deputies reconstructed the sequence of events. In an update, the Sheriff’s Office said witnesses reported a light-colored Subaru traveling in the same direction as the SUV before shots were fired. “We are working to identify the suspect vehicle and any occupants,” the agency said in a written statement. The agency did not release details about the make, model year or license plates, citing the ongoing investigation.
Investigators said the shooting occurred in the foothills between Conifer and Indian Hills, a stretch of 285 that funnels weekday commuters and mountain traffic toward the Denver metro. The area includes limited shoulder space and several intersections, including Settlers Drive and Sourdough Drive, where traffic merges at highway speeds. First responders treated the passenger at the scene before transport. Authorities did not release the victim’s name, age, or city of residence, stating only that next of kin had been notified. It was not immediately clear how many people were inside the SUV at the time of the crash, and officials did not describe injuries, if any, to other occupants.
Deputies said they are reviewing statements from motorists who were traveling southbound and reported seeing aggressive driving before the crash. Detectives were also working to obtain and review any available roadway cameras from nearby businesses or homes along the corridor. As of late Wednesday morning, investigators had not publicly identified a suspect, and they did not say how many shots were believed to have been fired. The Sheriff’s Office said updates would be provided as new information becomes available through the investigative division.
Highway 285 is a key route for residents of Conifer, Indian Hills and Evergreen, and closures there can quickly back up traffic through the foothills. On Tuesday night, drivers were diverted while the southbound lanes were shut for several hours. The sheriff’s office did not release a precise reopening time. Local agencies assisted with traffic control while state and county crews helped secure the scene lighting for investigators. Neighbors described a heavy law enforcement presence and long lines of vehicles waiting to pass the closure point.
By Wednesday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the investigation remains active and that details could change as detectives gather video and forensic evidence. Officials said additional updates may include a more specific vehicle description if investigators determine it will aid the search without risking the integrity of witness accounts. No court filings had been posted, and no advisories of pending charges were available in public records. The agency said any future announcements would note if an arrest is made or if investigators plan a public briefing.
Residents who live near the highway said they were startled by sirens and the prolonged closure. “It looked like a crash at first, then we saw more units and tape,” said a motorist who commutes from Evergreen. Another driver said they exited before the closure after seeing brake lights stacking up near Sourdough Drive. Hospital officials did not provide an update on the patient’s condition beyond what deputies released Wednesday morning.
As of Wednesday evening, deputies said the victim remained hospitalized and the search for the light-colored Subaru continued. Investigators plan to review additional video and witness statements through the week and will release new information when verified.
