Deputies say the 27-year-old set a mobile home on fire after the slayings; the children’s mother was badly burned.
PENSACOLA, Fla. — A 27-year-old Escambia County man is behind bars without bond after deputies said he killed two children Friday morning and set a mobile home on fire at a park off Flaxman Street, then escaped the blaze as neighbors rushed out to help.
Authorities identified the suspect as John Henry Walston Jr. Investigators said the victims were nine-year-old Vayden Orum and seven-year-old Rayden Smith, who were found dead inside the charred trailer at Grand Oak Mobile Home Park. The case has moved swiftly from a suspicious fire to a homicide and arson investigation led by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and state fire marshals. Sheriff Chip Simmons called the crime “heartbreaking,” as family members described a frantic attempt by the children’s mother to reach them through the smoke. Walston faces counts of premeditated murder, sexual assault on a victim under 12, arson, and killing an animal.
Deputies said the fire ignited early Friday, Nov. 7, inside a single-wide at Grand Oak, a cluster of trailers near Pensacola. Neighbors awoke to flames rolling out of the windows and the sound of sirens. Witnesses said the children’s mother ran inside despite the heat and smoke before being pulled back and transported for burns to a Mobile, Ala., treatment center. “I don’t know what else I can say about this terrible event except for please hug your children,” Sheriff Simmons said in a statement released over the weekend. Investigators said Walston left the home after setting the fire. He and one child were among those initially treated at a hospital, deputies said, before detectives pieced together what happened.
Walston was booked into the Escambia County Jail and ordered held without bond. Jail records list his residence in the same area as Grand Oak. Deputies alleged one child was sexually assaulted before both were killed, and that a dog was found dead inside the trailer. Officials said the boys had been staying over at Walston’s home. Tyler Smith, the father of Rayden and stepfather of Vayden, said the suspect had known the family for several years and owned the trailer. “How can you expect any human being to do this?” Smith said in an interview. A neighbor, John Wenzel, said the mother “went into the trailer trying to get them,” describing the interior as “totally involved.”
Grand Oak Mobile Home Park sits along Flaxman Street in Escambia County, just north of Pensacola city limits. The cluster of older trailers is tightly packed, a layout that can allow fire to spread quickly and complicate rescues. State fire investigators examined burn patterns while deputies canvassed the neighborhood for camera footage and witnesses. The Sheriff’s Office has not released a detailed timeline inside the home but said the children died before the fire was set. Officials have not publicly described the weapon or the exact cause of death, noting those details remain part of the homicide file. The mother’s condition was not immediately updated after her transfer to the burn center.
Walston faces two counts of premeditated murder, one count of sexual assault on a victim under 12, one count of arson, and a separate animal cruelty count tied to the dog found inside. Detectives said evidence from the scene and statements obtained during interviews supported the arrest. Court records show a first appearance scheduled for Nov. 26. Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue additional charges as autopsy results and lab testing return. The Sheriff’s Office said it is coordinating with the State Attorney’s Office and the State Fire Marshal on next steps, including a formal probable cause filing deadline under Florida law.
As the debris cooled, neighbors placed stuffed animals and candles near the lot. Some recalled seeing the boys playing in the park days before the fire. “It hurts you to your core,” Wenzel said. “Everybody’s just trying to wrap their heads around it.” Smith directed a brief message at the suspect, saying he hoped to see a stiff punishment in court. The Sheriff’s Office maintained a visible presence in the area through the weekend while investigators processed the trailer and towed away items for evidence.
Walston remained in the Escambia County Jail on Tuesday, and investigators said they are continuing to gather evidence and prepare filings ahead of the Nov. 26 court date. Officials said additional updates will be released as the homicide and arson investigations proceed.
