Philadelphia, PA — A devastating plane crash in Northeast Philadelphia resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including a child, and left 19 others injured on Friday. The incident involved a medical transport jet that crashed into a populated area, leading to widespread damage and a massive fire.
Among the deceased were six passengers aboard the jet and one person on the ground, who was in a vehicle at the time of the crash. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, who provided an update on Saturday morning, noted that those injured were quickly attended to, with numerous hospitals in the area mobilizing to offer aid.
Jefferson Health reported that 15 people received care immediately following the incident, with 12 already discharged. Meanwhile, Temple University Hospital treated six individuals, releasing them after care, and another remains hospitalized in fair condition.
The wreckage from the crash ignited extensive fires that engulfed multiple structures and vehicles, casting a pall of smoke over the area. Emergency crews worked diligently to extinguish the blazes, and a significant cleanup and investigative operation is underway in the affected four to six-block radius.
Adam Thiel, Philadelphia’s Managing Director, indicated that the crash site and surrounding areas are being thoroughly examined to ensure all debris is accounted for and to assess any potential structural damage. He also highlighted ongoing investigations into other locations where aircraft debris was discovered, pointing to possible complications during the flight.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid the vicinity of the crash site and to report any debris or unusual findings to emergency services. Additionally, Mayor Parker emphasized that no donations are currently needed, and there is no official fundraising effort underway for the victims.
To support those affected mentally and emotionally by the tragedy, the city has made mental health resources available, and a hotline has been established for those in need. For residents displaced by the crash, Samuel Fels High School has been designated as a temporary shelter.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) alongside the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has taken charge of the investigation. The NTSB had investigators on the ground shortly after the crash, and more team members have since joined to determine the cause and prevent future incidents.
Friday’s crash not only shook the local community but also drew reactions from leaders nationwide. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro acknowledged the swift actions of state troopers and local responders, praising the solidarity and support exhibited by Pennsylvanians in the aftermath.
International attention has also been focused on the incident, particularly due to the nationality of the victims on board the plane. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed the deaths and extended condolences, asserting that consular officials are in touch with the families and offering necessary assistance.
