Philadelphia, PA – A tragic aviation accident shook a Philadelphia neighborhood Friday evening when a medical transport jet crashed shortly after takeoff, causing a fireball that damaged several homes. The plane, a Learjet 55, was headed to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri with six passengers on board, including a child patient and her mother.
The crash, which occurred close to Northeast Philadelphia Airport – an airport predominately serving business and charter flights – unfolded around 6:30 p.m., impacting a residential area near Roosevelt Mall. Emergency responders rushed to the site, which drew crowds of onlookers and disrupted traffic in the bustling Rhawnhurst neighborhood.
Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania reported being in continuous communication with Philadelphia’s Mayor and local emergency services. He indicated that state resources were fully deployed to assist in managing the aftermath of the crash. “We are offering all Commonwealth resources as they respond to this devastating incident,” Shapiro said.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had recently taken off and was captured ascending to an altitude of 1,600 feet before vanishing from radar within about 30 seconds. The FAA announced that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) would lead an investigation to determine the crash’s specifics.
First responders and local authorities faced a challenging scene, as a video taken by a witness depicted a chaotic environment immediately following the incident. Debris littered the intersection near where the crash occurred, and an intense fire lit the area, accompanied by thick smoke ascending into the evening sky.
Flight spokespeople identified the passengers as all hailing from Mexico, with the child having received treatment for a life-threatening condition in Philadelphia. “These missions are critical, and the crew undergoes rigorous training to ensure safety and care,” remarked Shai Gold, a spokesperson for Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, which organized the transport.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his sorrow over the incident on social media, sending blessings to the families affected and commending first responders for their swift action at the scene.
The community has been left to grapple with the impact of this traumatic event. Meanwhile, the NTSB’s investigation proceeds, aiming to shed light on the sequence of events that led to this fatal crash and to potentially inform future safety protocols for similar medical transport missions.
