Investigators said surveillance video, witness accounts and license plate readers helped identify a suspect after the Wednesday night shooting.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A Pittsburgh man has been charged with criminal homicide after police said a traffic dispute ended with the fatal shooting of a 55-year-old driver in the city’s Sheraden neighborhood.
Joel Ingram, 41, was taken into custody less than an hour after officers found Dana Faulk wounded inside an SUV near Chartiers Avenue and Municipal Street on Wednesday night, according to police and court records. Faulk, a McKeesport resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ingram also faces a charge of carrying a firearm without a license.
Pittsburgh police said Zone 6 officers responded just before 9:15 p.m. to a two-round gunfire detection alert at the intersection. They found a Nissan Xterra parked along the road with damage from gunfire. Officers provided aid to the driver until medics arrived, but Faulk was pronounced dead shortly before 9:30 p.m.
A passenger in Faulk’s SUV told investigators that the encounter began at a traffic light near West Carson and Corliss streets, according to the criminal complaint. The witness said a driver in a dark-colored vehicle began yelling at Faulk and telling him to move forward while the vehicles waited at the light.
The two drivers exchanged words before the vehicles continued toward the Corliss Tunnel, the complaint said. Police allege that the other vehicle followed Faulk’s SUV through the tunnel and toward the West Busway. The driver then pulled alongside Faulk’s vehicle near Chartiers Avenue and Municipal Street and fired two shots, investigators said.
The passenger told detectives that Faulk became unresponsive after the gunfire and that the SUV drifted toward the sidewalk before stopping. The other vehicle left the area, police said. Another person approached the SUV and called 911 while the passenger tried to help Faulk.
Detectives used footage from surveillance cameras, information from witnesses and license plate reader records to track the vehicle believed to have been involved, according to court documents. Officers later stopped Ingram on Kennedy Avenue in the Perry South neighborhood and took him to police headquarters.
Police announced Ingram’s arrest while describing the investigation as active and ongoing. The charges are accusations, and Ingram has not been convicted. Court records indicated that he was being held in the Allegheny County Jail after bail was denied.
A preliminary hearing was listed for July 24 in Pittsburgh Municipal Court. Authorities had not announced whether additional charges were being considered or released further information about the evidence recovered in the case.
