Walterboro, South Carolina – An adult female was seriously injured when her single-engine plane crashed into a pond on private property in the 5000 block of Wiggins Road on the morning of January 2, 2024. The Piper aircraft had just taken off from Beaufort when it experienced mechanical problems, causing it to turn back toward Beaufort. The property owner, who was in his yard at the time, heard the plane strike several trees and nosedive into a pond in his yard. The plane’s engine was not running when it struck the trees, and the woman, who was the only person in the plane, was found unconscious with multiple injuries.
Firefighter-paramedics and the CARE Flight Medical helicopter responded to the scene, where they found the woman in critical condition. With the help of bystanders, the pilot was removed from the aircraft and transported to meet the CARE Flight crew, who performed advanced medical procedures. She was then transported to the Trauma Center at MUSC.
